DISEMPOWER YOURSELF!

"It was in the “Mobile Menu” of the project initiative “stay hungry”, where I first heard about the Trobriand Islands and their inhabitants in whose societies it is traditionally frowned upon to show hunger, to enjoy food or to spend a long time eating. In the West, however, it is considered particularly admirable to eat with pleasure and at the same time discipline a measure. I know that some people think I cannot measure, I cannot control my hunger." Amelie Jakubek, one of the organizational forces of this years Project Space Festival Berlin, hands us a personal view on how to encounter power structures.

Beyond Toxic Autonomy

"Art is part of the fabric of the city, but it is up to artists and art workers to work towards determining what precise role it plays. What happens when they realise the white walls they built often turn out to be parking schemes for post-crisis investment? What happens when the walls begin to implode, or are demolished?" Sonja Hornung proposes to carefully chose dependencies in order to design a future notion of autonomy.

Bored of tomorrow: Contemporary Fiction

Bored of tomorrow: Contemporary Fiction

"I am bored of the future, running from the past; feeling depressed keeping up with the 24-hour news cycle, but anxious to know of all the horror that’s going on in the world right at this very minute, slotting every terrible event into my predetermined political-economical-ethical analysis, computing, to then generate an appropriate excoriating Facebook rant." Rishin Singh, one of the bored of tomorrow events 'tour-guide' gives insights on how boring the future might be. And tells a funny joke.

A few words on the new technology of art

A few words on the new technology of art

"Art is increasingly migrating to the Internet. Artists still make physical objects and gallery owners open real exhibitions, but ultimately more and more people in the industry think not only about the physical aspect of their work, but also about its photo documentation."Natalya Serkova observes a spatial displacement of contemporary art towards virtual spaces. Critique has been raised, but a reasonable one?

Çilingir Sofrası

Çilingir Sofrası

'Inside: Thick, humid air, no breeze, twilight, a projector glowing. Cold beer, iced raki. Through the windows: sunlight, exhaled smoke, early evening, the open town. The food is free, the drinks are cheap. Let’s stay.'
Nino Klingler remembering the hot summery afternoon at Pose's Çilingir Sofrası at Hallo Machen, Berlin:
A communion in exhaustion, enveloped in shared fatigue over Turkish policies and German withdrawal.

A Carefrontation with Feminist Space | Part II: GOMO, COVEN & Ashley Berlin

"Maybe thinking more collectively and systematically can help, whether it’s on the level of consumer choices, the circulation of knowledge, access to opportunities and visibility, and beyond. Art can help with this. I also think art and culture come in to upset us and push us in different directions, so in that sense I would recommend witnessing art you don’t relate to [...]."

Countermovements

Countermovements

'To pick a lock you need feedback about the effects of your manipulations. To get the feedback you must train yourself to be sensitive to the responses of the lock.'
Fritz Laszlo Weber gives profound hints on how to handle a lock without a key and a key without a lock.

Whatever this is it will never be made again

Whatever this is it will never be made again

"Small community grows, assumed to lead somewhere. The assumption that aspiration is to leave the community to bigger things. To build it stronger, ensuring we all get somewhere. An idea is never more organic than the first stages. Where this idea goes is to be tread with caution. Is the basis of success the popularity of something? The higher price you can charge for people to view it?"
In her text, Alexsandra Norton not only poses sincere questions, she also gives courageous answers.

Artistic Parasitism

Artistic Parasitism

'In Berlin, the rats have long figured it out. Under no circumstances would they strain their widely accepted fugitive presence for such a thing as having dinner together. Instead, like the many other restless beings in this city, they abide by the imperative of dislocation and flexibility – in a way they perfected it.'
Feben Amara about rats and everything we should (un-)learn from them.

When the hunger starts – Project Space Festival Berlin 2019

The fifth Project Space Festival Berlin focuses entirely on its informal forces and seeks unexpected alliances with the city's protagonists and their contested terrains. Instead of a journey to the project spaces of the city, the festival visits their neighborhoods. This year's international edition of the Project Space Festival will take place under the title When The Hunger Starts from June 1-30, 2019 at public places in Berlin that change daily. With their open, translocal and often virtually transferred spatial practices, 29 project spaces were invited to have their events take place outside their own spaces or nearby environments. With this undertaking the participants relocate their program to the Berlin cityscape for a maximum of 24 hours.
